Tesamorelin is a synthetic 44-amino acid analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) that is FDA-approved (as Egrifta®) for the reduction of excess visceral abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. By stimulating the pituitary gland to release endogenous growth hormone, it preferentially targets and reduces deep visceral fat while preserving lean muscle mass and subcutaneous fat. Clinical trials have shown significant reductions in visceral adipose tissue (VAT), waist circumference, and liver fat, along with improvements in metabolic markers and body image. Common side effects include injection site reactions, joint/muscle aches, and mild fluid retention.
