Description
GDF-8, also known as Myostatin, is a member of the TGF-β superfamily and a key negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth. It is naturally produced by muscle cells and acts to limit muscle mass by inhibiting muscle cell proliferation and differentiation. Mutations or inhibition of GDF-8 lead to significantly increased muscle size and strength, as seen in "double-muscled" animals and rare human cases. It is a major target in research for treating muscle-wasting diseases (such as muscular dystrophy) and for potential muscle-building therapies.
